Gordon Fleming Judd was born at ‘Fernhill’ in Cheltenham, Victoria in 1908. The Fernhill property was the residence of his grandfather in law, George Davie. Young Gordon also spent some childhood years at ‘Glenfellah’ in Wickham Rd, Moorabbin. Everyone knew Gordon as ‘Don’.
Don married Thelma Migan in 1908 and was 24 years old when his first daughter, June, was born in 1932. It was the ‘Great Depression’ and Don was employed as a driver/wood carter, working at his father’s wood yard.
In December 1935, Don successfully applied for a position with the Australian Mutual Provident Society (AMP), selling insurance. He was a dedicated AMP man for 38 years until his retirement in 1973.
He was an avid lawn bowler and played A Grade for Hampton Bowling Club for many years (later Dromana Bowls Club). Don was also a keen gardener and the various homes he and Thel lived in all had immaculate gardens.
