Described as 20 years old with fair hair, hazel eyes, 5’ 7 ½ tall and weighing 11 stone 12 pounds at enlistment with AIF. Nowhere in his war record is his date of birth indicated (or required it would seem).

1915: JOHNSON- On the 21st May, killed in action at the Dardanelles (according to his Service record he was killed at Gallipolli on the first day of the Anzac landing: 25 Apr 1915), Frank Thomas Johnson, late of Myrtle Road, East Camberwell, beloved grandson of Mrs. Mary Quennell and the late William Thomas Quennell; beloved nephew of Alice, Millicent and Alfred Quennell, "Kennington" 7 Weinberg grove,' Hawthorn.
Died nobly.

The Dardanelles is a narrow strait bordering the Gallipoli peninsula and connecting the Aegean Sea with the Sea of Mamara. The Bosporus is another strait connecting the Sea of Mamara to the Black Sea.
